"Kind and gentle whatever his faults.”
Albert was born August 18, 1804 in the new state of Ohio. The family was still living in the log house of Belle View. He had a different personality from that of his older brother James which was a concern to his parents. Albert was a child of high spirits, a charmer, and very popular with his brothers and sisters. They always found him “kind and gentle whatever his faults.”
Albert and his father Thomas had a stormy relationship due to his recklessness and inattention to learning. In an attempt to improve Albert’s habits and business sense, Thomas sent him down river on one of his flatboats to New Orleans to oversee his business affairs there. This proved to be a match for Albert who took to the fast paced society life of the city. He liked to gamble and acquired many debts. He became involved as a second in a duel and had to flee the city for a time.
During a visit back in Chillicothe, Albert worked for his brother James and brother-in-law Arthur Watts selling farm equipment in Chillicothe. This did not last. Returning to New Orleans, Albert’s troubles continued. Alcohol compounded his problems and debts mounted. Finally, his health failed. In 1832 Albert came home to Adena where he died two years later at the age of 30.
